Weekly Meal Planning

There isn’t much to report on the weekly meal planning front.  Last week, Bret made most of the dinners and I had lots of leftovers for lunch, so I didn’t try anything new.

I am going to try something new for breakfast this week, though – overnight oatmeal!  I found a bunch of recipes online that I’m going to give a try, like this Apple Cinnamon Refrigerator Oatmeal from The Yummy Life.  There seems to be an endless amount of possibilities, so I hope I find some flavors that I like!

From The Yummy Life

Last night I made sloppy joe’s in the slow cooker using a new recipe with ground turkey from Skinny Ms.  I’m planning to use this meal as my lunch for the week and pair it with some veggies.

How has healthy eating been going for you?  I seem to have bursts of cooking inspiration amidst a week full of laziness…go figure!

Super Bowl Sunday

Did you watch? As a Buffalo Bills fan living in Philadelphia, I had no dog in this fight   but I was looking forward to watching it at home with Bret.  All I can say is that I wanted to be entertained, and overall, I wasn’t!  Congrats to Peyton Manning and the Broncos for taking care of business, but it made for a boring game.  The Panthers just couldn’t handle that defense.  Sorry, Cam!

What did you think of the Halftime Show?  I liked the tribute to past performers (Whitney and Michael Jackson still give me chills), but I was really disappointed in Coldplay and didn’t see the need for Beyonce and Bruno Mars.  I guess I just didn’t get it…

I wish I could say that I made a bunch of healthy Super Bowl recipes, but nope, we went for the classics – pizza and wings!  We also went to the bar for a little while before the game and had some great beer and really fantastic nachos.  Sorry, I didn’t take any pictures!

Last Days of Drinking Before Lent

Since declaring last week that I’m giving up drinking for Lent, I’ve been on my farewell tour.

Pretty much any opportunity that we’ve gone out, I’ve had a drink for old times’ sake.  A beer with nachos on Sunday, a hurricane with brunch on Saturday, a couple of beers at dinner at a new restaurant on Friday…it’s been a fun week.

It’s been great to hear the positive feedback from people on the blog as I embark on this journey (thank you!) and I’m still looking forward to the challenge.  One friend told me I won’t have as much fun because I won’t be drinking with everyone else, but my goal is to not let that happen.  You shouldn’t need to drink to have fun!

I plan to use the Weekly Wrap to check in on how I’m doing without drinking, so hopefully you’ll keep up with me every Monday!

How was your week? Did you watch the Super Bowl?

  1. I was happy to see Bruno back for the halftime show. I’m not a big pop music fan, but he’s just so infectious and fun! He kind of makes me think that Michael Jackson could have been more like that if he hadn’t gotten so weird.

    I ate a ton of guacamole (I make a really good one) ! Ooopss….

  2. I was very disappointed with the halftime show. It’s the only thing I watched for the game, and it was meh. I think the halftime shows are declining in quality, just like the commercials. They should have one act that can carry the whole show and not multiple ones.

  3. I loved Beyonce and Coldplay! But I realize not everyone did. I watched for the ads but they didn’t thrill me at all this year. The Puppy Bowl was amazing, however. 🙂

  4. I kind of feel bad for the SB entertainment organizers because they need to try to appeal to everybody, which is impossible. I did enjoy the look back at past performances. You can totally skip the drinks! I know you can! It’s all about what is habitual and finding something else to fill that spot. I’ve been free of sweets most of the year so far and I’ve filled that void with citrus fruit and protein bites. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

    1. It’s true…I’ll say they were better than that Black Eyed Peas performance a few years ago…that was awful, haha! I liked the look back to the past as well, needed more of that! And you’re right about the nondrinking – when there’s a will, there’s a way! Kudos to you staying away from the sweets!

  5. We had pizza for the Superbowl too! 🙂 I’m a fan of Coldplay and it was nice to see Bruno Mars and Beyonce but I really wish it was more of Coldplay. Oh well. The tribute to the singers in the past was nice! Good luck with the giving up drinking for lent. You will do great! You definitely don’t need to drink to have fun!

  6. I only watched the Super Bowl for the commercials LOL. I’ve given up alcohol before (hello, pregnant/nursing) and life was just as fun. In fact, generally I only drink if there’s a good craft beer available. Otherwise I’m happy with water.

  7. The Super Bowl – oh boy – it was actually a pretty terrible game. Both offenses were just horrendous, but I’m glad Peyton got a big win if this was truly his last game. I thought the Half Time show was pretty good, but I was confused with all the flashbacks. I kept thinking they were bringing out another surprise guest! haha

  8. I thought the Panthers would have played a little better as well, congrats to Peyton. I am in it for the commercials and snacks anyway. The half time show I thought was good but definitely did not make sense- LOL! Good luck with Lent- I will cheer you on!

  9. I love overnight oats! My favorite concoction uses almond milk and Chobani coconut yogurt for soaking. We were rooting for the Broncos because Peyton Manning is “old like us.” 😉

  10. Jenelle, I am so happy to have you join us for Weekly Wrap!
I love overnight oats! I haven’t had them in a few weeks which by reading this makes me want to fix some tonight. I’m kind of simple I just put some nut butter and maybe a spoonful of chocolate chips. I’ve ate them hot or cold either way is fine with me. You are right there are so many ways to enjoy them.

I’m with you Janelle, I wasn’t impressed with the half time show and I did not have anything healthy to eat. Ok life goes on and today is a new day and I did start it off with a run to try and redeem myself.

I’m so proud of you for giving up drinking for lent. Isn’t that what lent is all about you wouldn’t give up dentist visits, hello?? You can do this and honestly it’s no secret I drink but when I’m around a bunch of people, I have more fun not drinking and watching them!!! So pshhhh to the one who said you won’t have fun!
I cant’ wait to see how well you do in this. Hope you have a great week!

  11. I’ve considered giving up alcohol for lent, but not sure if I want to commit! I think I should have prepared myself weeks ago if I was going to do that…but we will see, maybe I’ll give it a try. If not I need to come up with another plan before Wednesday!

  12. That oatmeal sounds delicious!! I did not watch the Superbowl, due to my present time zone. I will have to catch up on the good commercials later. I haven’t really thought about giving up anything for Lent – it had actually escaped me that it starts this week. I suppose I should use this as a time to get serious about cutting out the cookies in meetings. Good luck with yours!

  13. I enjoyed seeing Bruno Mars during the halftime show, but honestly the game was not that exciting for me. The Panthers made alot of errors and the Denver defense got it done. Apple cinnamon oatmeal sounds yummy!

  14. I watched through half of the halftime show and then a little bit at the end. We were at a friend’s house, and I had to leave to take little man home to get to bed for school. Everything was just a little bit meh.

Otherwise, my week was great and it sounds like yours was, too!

  15. The halftime show was… somethin’ else. :-/ On the plus side, I’m convinced that that adorable Bruno Mars gyrating in his leather suit is what is causing this surprise snow storm in our area tonight and tomorrow. Totally convinced!

  16. Welcome to the Weekly Wrap, Janelle! I’m delighted you joined us. I say the same thing ALL the time “you shouldn’t have to drink to have fun”. Don’t get me wrong — I do like a cocktail, but it should not be a requirement for fun! I’m sure you’ll do great during Lent. I completely missed the Super Bowl halftime show. We had been out to watch the game but decided to come home at halftime. I really enjoy cooking in the crockpot and I’m always happy when others share their recipes. I hope to see you here next week!
