It’s Wednesday, which means it’s What I Ate Wednesday link-up time along with Peas and Crayons!
In honor of my weekend trip in New York City, I’m featuring the meals that I ate while I was in the Big Apple.
My friends and I got into New York at about 1:00 pm, so once we made our way to our hotel and settled in, we were famished! It took a little lot of research but we finally agreed to a burger joint called Mikey’s.
I loved the atmosphere, but then again I enjoy the more dive-y spots. There was a simple counter with the menu written on a chalkboard. I ordered the lunch special which included a burger, fries, and a drink, which came to $11.50. I got the Matteo burger which was their homemade veggie burger, with cheddar cheese. Man was it delicious and filling!
I was pretty starved, so much that I didn’t take a picture. But just Google image it and you’ll see it was serious business!
It was my friend’s 30th birthday bash so the main event was dinner at Beauty and Essex. Talk about fancy! It’s actually really cool because the front of the establishment is a pawn shop, so it’s got that great Speakeasy vibe.
I enjoy fine dining, but it’s not something that I do every weekend. This place was the real deal. There was a large selection of cocktails and wines and the food menu is expansive if not overwhelming. Naturally, I ordered 2 cocktails: The Book Burner and Beauty Elixir. The Book Burner consisted of: Scotch bonnet-cherry infused Zacapa rum, maraschino liqueur, grapefruit and sour cherry jam. The Beauty Elixir had: Oxley gin, cucumber, strawberry, and sparking rose. They were both great (at $14 a piece!), but the Book Burner was definitely my favorite!
For the actual dinner, I really didn’t know what to choose…but I decided to get the Garganelli. There was a great spice from the veal bolognese, and it surprised me how much FOOD I got, for such a fancy place. As you can see, I ate pretty well!
I wasn’t sure if anyone would actually be interested in dessert, but everyone was enjoying their food and wanted to keep it going. We ordered the Petite Cupcakes for our table of 4 with a trio of regular, hazelnut, and rum ice creams (I was really trying to indulge myself). As a bonus, we were extremely lucky to have an extra dessert accidentally delivered to our table! This treat is the Pumpkin Ice Box Cake, which has a tasty gingersnap crust! Everyone was crazy about this dessert! I liked it just fie…I’m probably still all pumpkin’d out from the Fall season.
Overall, everything was really delicious! Color me impressed! I’d love to come back to Beauty and Essex on a romantic date with my boyfriend. 🙂
Sadly this was a really quick trip…so once we checked out of the hotel it was time to enjoy our last few hours in New York with a local place for brunch. We decided to just walk into Spitzer’s Corner.
The space was really nice, full of wooden decor, but at 10:30 am, it was super empty. We were very disappointed to learn that alcohol can’t be served on Sundays until noon, so no mimosas for us! None of us were really blown away by the menu, but once I got my meal, I was really satisfied. I ordered the spinach and tomato omelet, which came with a side of very spicy hash browns. I loved the presentation!
To say that we had a “wild night” would be a bit of an understatement…let’s just say that we really needed to eat! So Spitzer’s did a good job for the hangover, but it’s not a place I’d go for a regular meal…at least not for brunch. It looks like a great venue for Happy Hour though.
I had a great time in New York City and look forward to going back! Where are your favorite places to eat in NYC?
