Philly Marathon Training Week 3 Recap

Happy Monday!  Did you have a good weekend?  I can’t believe the Olympics are finally over.  I have to admit I’m glad I get my life back, and now I’m seriously thinking about heading to Tokyo in 2020 – they’re going to have a blast!

I am now entering my fourth week of marathon training – time is flying by!  Things are still going pretty well, but I’m getting anxious to start running 4 days a week.  It will still be a few weeks before that time comes, but the nice thing about 3 days a week is that there’s no excuse to get it all done!

I’m joining in the Weekly Wrap with Holly and Tricia where women share their health and fitness activities, successes and challenges!

And congrats to AnnMarie for winning my giveaway for a free subscription to PlateJoy for customized, healthy meal plans online!

Weekly Wrap: Birthday Recap

night kitchen bakery german chocolate cake

The most amazing cake ever

So it’s official:  I am finally a member of the 30 club!  I had a really great time celebrating my birthday.  While I didn’t go on a fancy trip like last year in Charleston, SC, I still had a few great days.

On Wednesday night, I celebrated the last day of my 20’s with a Happy Hour with coworkers and friends.  It was a really nice time with fantastic cocktails and great food.  My sister even drove up from Maryland to celebrate with me.  I hadn’t laughed so much in a long time!

I was so thankful for the sweet gifts and kind gestures I received from friends and loved ones – I was even gifted a bottle of Polish vodka, haha!

My sister got me a crossbody Coach bag that is SO nice – I love it!  She also got me a bracelet from Alex and Ani with a charm for buying a house – super cute!

Bret really surprised me.  I got some great Nebraska gear to wear during football season (which is almost here, a gift and a curse!), but he sent a bouquet of roses to my office and got me a German chocolate cake from a local bakery that is absolutely delicious!

I really felt the love for my 30th so I have no complaints.  I already feel older, wiser, and not dealing with people’s nonsense anymore.  Certain things just aren’t bothering me the way that they used to.  What a relief!

Was happy to see so many people come out for happy hour!

Philly Marathon Training Week 3 Recap:

Monday 8/15:  Hill repeats!  This time, I had to do 6 repeats as part of my 5-mile run.  The weather was a little less miserable so overall I felt good during the workout, but pretty tired once it was complete!

Tuesday 8/16:  I took a mixed level vinyasa yoga class at the local studio – the previous week I took HIIT barre.  This class was just as intense!  There were only 2 of us taking the class but the instructor kept us busy!  Everyone was really friendly, but I realized I’m pretty rusty with my yoga right now!  I need to get back to a weekly effort.

Wednesday 8/17:  Since we attempted some headstand(!) moves in yoga, my upper back was pretty sore!  No workouts since I was having Happy Hour that evening for my birthday.

Thursday 8/18:  Finally, it was my birthday!  I kicked off the day with a 3-mile run which felt great but was actually pretty darn slow.  Morning humidity strikes again!

Friday 8/19:  No workouts since I had a very busy weekend ahead of me!

Saturday 8/20:  City Fit Girls’ annual FitRetreat!  It was a VERY intense day of working out (I am still sore on Monday!).  I’ll be sharing a recap on the blog tomorrow, but you can check out last year’s FitRetreat recap.

Sunday 8/21:  I went for my 8-mile long run in the morning.  Prior to the run, I took a UCAN snack bar and during the run used the Honey Stinger chews for fuel, 3 chews every 45 minutes.  I’m not sure if the fueling plan worked perfectly, but minus a couple of slower miles on a trail, my pacing was great!

Week 3 Report Card:

I did a lot of workouts this past week!  In addition to my 3 training runs, I was able to do yoga, cardio kickboxing, and a killer upper body-focused boot camp class.  And plenty of pushups, planks, lunges, and squats were had over the past week!

The weather continues to be a drag and I’m completely soaked after each run, but I have to remember that I’m working really hard.  I recently talked to my boss about training and he admired that I can run longer than 5 miles in the heat.  I may be extremely slow out there, but I’m doing my best.  And I feel fitter and stronger than I have in a long time!

With all of that said, I’m giving Week 3 an A!  This week I’ll be doing a 12-mile long run, so I’m hoping the weather will be less miserable so I can get through it!

How was your week?  What do you like to do for your birthday?
