I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. If you’ve followed the news, you know that things have been absolutely insane as another unarmed black man, George Floyd, was mercilessly killed by a white police officer. As a result, there have been protests all over the country and even around the globe. Philadelphia has been particularly riled up; while there have been peaceful protests, several areas of the city have been set aflame and businesses destroyed. We’ve been having curfews over the weekend on top of the stay at home order for COVID-19. How do you cope with so much unrest in this country? Working out helps, but only so much…

Weekly Rundown: Crazy Times

Monday 5/25: I ran the Girls on the Run Philly Virtual 5K on Memorial Day. I completely winged my running route and ended up running on a pretty busy road part of the way…not smart. I guess it helped me keep up the pace though, as I was pretty happy with my finish time, especially since I had a couple of walk breaks. This was my first postpartum race!

I hadn’t run all week, but I finally made it out the door to participate in the @gotrphilly virtual 5k! Girls on the Run is an awesome organization that provides girls with mentorship and meets for afterschool coaching and running. They always have a big 5K at the end of the program but COVID-19 had other plans! I’m so glad to support the cause, and you can still sign up and run, walk or bike 5K until 5/31! Tuesday 5/26: I did a 2-mile walk in the afternoon and in the evening I did the City Fit Girls Strength Club workout. The workout had a lot of walking lunges, but I couldn’t complete them as my knees started to get really sore.

Wednesday 5/27: Yoga/barre fusion class on Zoom. This workout was a bit of a mess. I missed the entire yoga section because I was feeding the baby, I left my weights in the wrong room, and the video had bandwidth issues. But I still had a nice burn!

Thursday 5/28: 2-mile walk in the afternoon. Then I did the City Fit Girls Strength Club workout before going to bed.

Friday 5/29: 30-minute Happy Hour barre class. It was nice to be able to squeeze in this workout while Baby E played on the floor nearby.

Saturday 5/30: City Fit Girls Strength Club Zoom workout. It was another fun time and I learned some new moves. I just have to modify my planks as I rebuild my core. Then later in the afternoon, I went for a brief solo walk.

Another great workout!

Sunday 5/31: Freihofer’s Run for Women Virtual 5K. Thanks to Darlene, I was able to sign up for this one. I went a different route this time but I started out WAY too fast, so I had many more walk breaks. But the nice thing was that Bret and Baby E went out on a walk and I was able to meet them at the “finish line”. I so look forward to us having more memories like this at real races as she grows older.

Weekly Report Card

I had a pretty ambitious schedule for working out this week: running two 5K’s, doing 3 Strength Club sessions, and taking 2 barre classes. I’m glad I was able to get it all done while not pushing myself too hard! This is an easy week to give me an A+. What I really need is more time on the yoga mat…not just to help with mobility but to help clear my mind during these difficult times.
