We have had one heck of a winter, haven’t we? Fortunately, Mother Nature has finally given us a bit of a reprieve and we’ve got warm weather in the 60’s this week! But before the season is done we are expecting snow next week…again!

If you’ve been running through the winter like I have, the cold weather has been relentless so having the right gear to stay warm is essential. I’ve been really happy with my pair of WhitePaws RunMitts, convertible mittens that have kept my hands toasty on the run. I highly recommend them and I’m happy to share my review!

WhitePaws RunMitts Review

So what are these run mitts that I speak of and how do they work? Here’s a quote directly from their website:

WhitePaws RunMitts cover both your fingers and thumb and give you the ability to flip the top to cool down. Unlike traditional mittens or gloves, you can push the mittens down to your wrist without having to take them off and possibly lose one. No more sticking your mittens in a pocket or down your shirt, then fumbling to get them back on again.

RunMitts come in a variety of styles and colors. They have Wind and Water Resistant, Wick ‘n Dry, and Double Velour Fleece, the latter of which I was able to test out.

WhitePaws RunMitts is a woman-owned and black-owned business based out of Baltimore, Maryland. Here’s a great video from the founder and inventor, Susan Clayton!

Wearing WhitePaws RunMitts

Thanks to the miserable winter that we’ve had this year LOL, I’ve had lots of opportunities to wear my WhitePaws RunMitts. They accompanied me on several runs in 20-40 degree weather and a few winter hikes through the snow and have perfectly kept my hands warm. This was my first time wearing running mittens so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the double velour fleece is very soft and comfortable. When I wore them while it was snowing, the fleece did get wet, but my hands stayed dry.

One thing I will recommend is to make sure you measure your hands when you order them so that you get the right fit! I ordered a medium and they were surprisingly snug when I first put them on, but they are much more comfortable once you break them in.

The best thing about running with these mittens is that you don’t need to take them off. When I used to wear my running gloves, I had to stuff them in the pockets of my running jacket when my hands got too warm and hope they don’t fall out. A couple of years ago I was running in Prospect Park and it finally happened – I dropped one of my gloves – thankfully someone found it for me as I had to run at least a half-mile back to retrieve them!

They served me well on my 7 mile long run! I took them off once I was done running.

The convertible design is also great when you need to tie your running shoes, use your smartphone, or handle your running fuel. Just pull back the convertible part of the mitten and your fingers and thumb are free! I have wasted a lot of time fumbling with my gloves over the years doing these simple tasks!

The RunMitts also have a space where you can insert handwarmers. I haven’t used that feature but it is good to know! I can definitely see people wearing these mitts at outdoor sporting events or winter festivals.
